When Ross and Juliet Schultz started the company known as Active VMA in 1997, it was because they love a good challenge. Like many Kiwi success stories, they believe that a hardworking, mud-on-the-boots approach creates the foundation - but that the secret to success is actually understanding the customer's needs, searching for solutions and integrating modern technologies to engineer the solution.

Since 1997, Active VMA has been transforming vehicles, machinery and attachments by re-engineering OEM products to suit the demands of New Zealand customers. Our vehicles can be found in a range of industries from transport and roading, infrastructure and vegetation, through to forestry and agriculture.

We take generic OEM vehicles and machinery and re-engineer them to be fit for the forestry, roading, transport and agriculture industries. We are also agents for world-renowned brands FAE, SIMEX, and TEREX Utilities, and can provide TungChip for added performance and durability.

Solutions begin with active listening. At the start of every project, our experienced product managers meet the end user to understand exactly what they want to achieve. After decades in the industry, it's our ability to ask the right questions that allows us to engineer fit for purpose solutions that consistently satisfy expectation and deliver opportunity.

This includes proactively looking for any obstacles throughout the process and then offering solutions, so there are no unexpected surprises when your vehicle, machine or attachment arrives.

Over the years we've developed thousands of solutions for our customers. As time goes by, we often have clients coming to us with similar or repeat requests, which is why we have recently introduced our fast-track production range known as Active Defined Products (ADP). In many cases, we've previously built what you are asking for, we've captured every detail and ironed out the kinks. Choosing an ADP offers numerous benefits including a proven solution at a more competitive price, faster turn-around times.

Formed by Ross & Juliet Schultz, the companies roots were founded when the Rotorua manufacturing division of Fruehauf Trailers was closed down (formerly Roadrunner Trailers), where Ross had been employed as the Workshop Manager.

Active Transport Engineers was established in the early part of 1997 and commenced trading on 1 April of that year. Originally located in the Godfrey Transport yard on Allen Mills Road, Ross opened the workshop employing one staff member, who to this day, is still employed at ActiveVMA. The main core of business was the service and repair work on trucks & trailers.

In 2002 as the company was growing and expanding into heavy machinery work the name was changed to Active Engineering Solutions to better reflect the type of work being carried out and the direction in which the company was heading.

Over the years Active VMA have changed premises three times to keep up with the growth of the business. In 2014 we moved into our current premises at 3-7 McCloskey Road, this is a purpose built facility which enables us to manufacture a world-class engineering solutions.

Now known as Active VMA, reflecting the evolution of the company, we specialise in vehicles, machinery and attachments. In 2016 we went through a re-brand, our brand focus is about pulling together the three parts of the business and making it easier for customers to understand what we do. Our focus has always been about creating equipment that is fit for purpose. This focus has proven highly successful and solidified our philosophy of 'engineering a legacy' - a bold statement and the essence of the new brand.

One of the key objectives of the re-brand is to educate customers that investing in quality upfront will not only deliver better outcomes immediately, but will result in substantial savings across the lifecycle of the vehicle. One of our key messages, 'Smarter, Stronger, Longer' is used to explain the value Active VMA strive to add and how their robust development process ensures vehicles are built to endure practically any situation.
